Dr. Don Ridgeway, one of SKA's original twelve blackbelts, is mentioned by Master Ohshima in the Foreword of the English translation of Master Funakoshi's master text Karate-Do Kyohan as one of three people who "struggled with [him] for long hours over this text."  Dr. Ridgeway started karate in 1958 and was Captain of the Caltech Dojo from 1959-61.  From 1982-1996, he was the PE Department's Karate instructor (PE 235) at N.C. State, with an appointment as Visiting Professor of Physical Education added to his regular appointment as Professor of Statistics and Physics.
